A HUG FROM THE GROUND
Tranquillity Living Memorial Commons is a regenerative architectural intervention transforming a neglected historical cemetery into a vibrant, multi-functional memorial ecosystem. Located on a site serving as the final resting place for 59 local people who laid the city’s foundations, the project integrates a 191.75-square-meter timber structure. By merging memorial, education, and ecology, the design creates a “protected sanctuary” that honors the past while fostering a sustainable future for the urban environment.
The project is defined by functionality and sustainability. Utilizing a microclimate strategy, the design delineates three programmatic sectors—Community, Wellness, and Memory—while preserving the historic landscape. Inspired by the rhythmic placement of gravestones, circular timber arches manifest a “Hug from the Ground,” creating a sanctuary that honors the city’s ancestors.
At the core lies the Tree-Pod Cradle, a structural embodiment of the mission to Remember, Embrace, and Nurture. Drawing from the Capsula Mundi movement, this light concrete installation is engraved with the names of the 59 individuals. Functioning as a rotating nursery, it cultivates local berry trees for future urban replanting, ensuring the legacy of the past literally breathes new life into the community’s future.
The result is a successful transformation of a 191.75 – square-meter urban void into a landmark of regenerative design. The project has integrated the city’s history into its future ecological growth, proving that memorial spaces can be active, living contributors to the urban fabric.
